I’m not totally sure why I like Lana Del Rey. I mean she’s just so…different. She put out two music videos toward the last half of 2011 and became an instant internet sensation (somewhat). The hype built up once the announcement of her album coming in January. I read as much as I can about her, and I didn’t like what I saw. I didn’t get her at all. What was so great? I quickly followed in line behind “some critics” who bashed her. Daddy is a millionaire, she makes story up about living in a trailer park to get the “middle class” touch, she changes her name, possible plastic surgery rumors, etc. I believed it for like a week.
I started listening to personal interviews and things that she had written about herself online. I thought wow…so what she changes her bloody name?!? Many pop stars do that, many have rich parents, and yes many change their appearance (Gaga, Minaj anyone?) So I reluctantly bought the album for the hell of it. A few songs in I started not to like it. I then saw her on SNL and I thought what the hell was that?? Again she was bashed from the media. What I like is that she didn’t care. She doesn’t like being told how to move or perform a certain way.
She’s much more comfortable playing small intimate gigs just like Adele. Lana has become so intriguing to me lately. It took me months to fall in love with every song on that album, and now I think she’s modern Nancy Sinatra. Sure she probably cares more about her looks than her voice and fame, but I love her! She’s so mysterious. You would think someone with the looks she has would be prancing around on stage lip synching with dancers all around her, and selling herself out to every media interview…but it’s not happening.
She’s just doing what she wants and not giving a f**k. Maybe she won’t put out another album for 6 years, maybe she’ll be a fashion model. I say that people should stop judging her for every little thing and questioning her to death. I appreciate what she has done thus far, and I hope to hear more from her in the future. She is kind around her fans & a fantastic throw back to the 60’s era. It’s in her looks and music. Lana, “I’ll love you till’ the end of time, I would wait a million years”.
